TRIT002 - Neverland / Candles of Paradise
Neverland is Kyle Cheatham and Joshua Inwood, a lo-fi duo out of Portland, Oregon. Their songs are characterized by shimmering synths and Cheatham’s tender vocals. They take on grand themes such as good and evil, love and God. But make no mistake, despite the scope of the lyrics, there is no pomposity here. The songs are eminently listenable, even catchy, with hooks and beats lurking in the tape fog. In true we-don’t-give-a-fuck style, all the songs were recorded in Garage Band, then transferred to tape, be it cassette or, in the case of the digital versions, 1/4” tape, then back to digital. Neverland is intoxicating, slightly creepy, and immensely satisfying.
Candles of Paradise is Nancy Brown and JR Thomason, a mid-fi duo out of Brooklyn, New York. “Brown is blurring the line between goth and gospel on her new self-titled EP with three tracks built on phlegmatic percussion, bare-bones keyboard and organ parts and – best of all – the gorgeous hues of her sad and waxen voice.” Nancy Brown, the mastermind behind the spooky sound, recently traveled to Denton, Texas to record. Because JR was on tour, she hired Steve Hill, formerly of The Baptist Generals, to stand in on percussion. Everything was recorded on 1/2” tape. The final results are strange, morose, sparse, and, ultimately, moving.
The cassette, lovingly handmade as always, is available for $6. To purchase, or to download the digital counterpart, visit:
